The Boy Who Found a Home

A story about the people who stay.

One boy grew up believing something was missing. Years later, he discovered that his life had been built all along—by the neighbors, teachers, coaches, elders, and ordinary people who quietly refused to let him walk alone.

Chapter One

The Sign at the Edge of Town

The sign said Marietta with an arrow, as if a place could be that simple to find. Ricky read it every morning on the walk to school and thought about all the people the arrow pointed toward—people who already knew where they were going, and who was waiting when they got there.

Chapter Four

A Chair, a Mirror, a Man

Mr. Faulk turned the chair slowly so the boy could see himself. 'Look at him,' he said. 'That's somebody. Don't let anybody tell you different, and don't you tell yourself different either.' The clippers started again. Neither of them said anything else for a while.

Chapter Nine

The Long Table

There were never enough chairs at Aunt Lucile's table, which is how he learned that a family is not measured by its furniture. Somebody always scooted. Somebody always shared. Nobody ever asked him why he was there.

Chapter Fourteen

Seventh Inning

Coach Powell pulled him aside after the error. 'I'm not worried about the ball,' he said. 'I'm worried about what you tell yourself for the next ten minutes.' Twenty years later, he would still hear that voice in rooms Coach Powell would never enter.

Last Chapter

The People Who Stayed

He had spent a childhood counting what was missing. It took him half a life to count what was there: a barber, an officer, an aunt who was not an aunt, a pastor, a lunch lady, a coach. A house is built once. A home is built by hands, over years, by people who choose to stay.
